Most Americans consume more than twice the recommended amount of salt each day. The National Salt Reduction Initiative is a coalition of cities, states and health organizations who are working to help food and beverage manufacturers and restaurants voluntarily reduce the amount of salt in their products. The initiative is asking that companies join the effort and strive for a 25% reduction in their sodium. Today’s emphasis on healthy foods, by both the Institute of Medicine and the FDA, has sent a wake-up call to the food and beverage industry: reduce the sodium content in process foods or it may be mandated.
